Nigeria-eligible CB who was named in South Africa's provisional AFCON squad trialling at Midtjylland
Published: January 10, 2024SuperSport United central defender Ime Okon, who is eligible for Nigeria through his father and South Africa where he was born, is trialing at Danish Superliga club FC Midtjylland.
Okon was named in South Africa's 50-man provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations but will not be on the plane to Ivory Coast, with 2017 AFCON-winning coach Hugo Broos opting for more experienced defenders.
According to Tipsbladet, Okon has showed up at FC Midtjylland to undergo trials with a view to a potential transfer.
Ime Okon reportedly has a year and a half left on his contract with SuperSport United.
If the defender impresses the coaching staff at FC Midtjylland, the three-time Danish champions have to pay a transfer fee to sign him on a permanent basis.
The South African-Nigerian would be competing with Sverrir Ingi Ingason, Mads Bech Sørensen, Juninho, Han-beom Lee and Henrik Dalsgaard at the centre of defence if signed by FC Midtjylland.
Three players named in Nigeria's provisional AFCON squad - Paul Onuachu, Raphael Onyedika and Frank Onyeka - are products of the FC Midtjylland academy.
