Adebayo matches the feat of Kanu, Yakubu, Ighalo, Iheanacho, Awoniyi, 4 others after goal for Luton Town
Published: May 04, 2024Super Eagles hopeful Elijah Adebayo netted in his first Premier League start since February 10 as Luton Town and Everton shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road on Friday night.
Adebayo has returned to full fitness after recovering from a hamstring issue that saw him miss eleven consecutive matches in the English top-flight.
After a Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty put Everton in front in the 24th minute, Adebayo equalized for the Hatters seven minutes later when he chested the ball in the box and finished brilliantly with a left footed strike.
In doing so, the Fulham-reared center forward became the tenth Nigerian player in history to score at least ten goals in a single Premier League season.
The nine other Nigerian players that have managed double digits in a single Premier League season include Efan Ekoku, Nwankwo Kanu, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Obafemi Martins, Peter Odemwingie, Odion Ighalo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Emmanuel Dennis and Taiwo Awoniyi.
Yakubu, the highest scoring Nigerian player in Premier League history with 95 goals, achieved double digits in a remarkable six seasons - 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007-2008 and 2011-2012.
Ekoku reached double digits in the 1993- 1994 and 1996-1997 campaigns, Kanu in 1999-2000 and 2006-2007, and Peter Odemwingie in two successive seasons after joining West Brom from Lokomotiv Moscow.
