Strongest Nigerian Player Comes Off Bench To Score For Wycombe WanderersAn inspired substitution by Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth, who introduced Adebayo Akinfenwa at the start of the second half, almost paid off in his side’s 2-1 loss to Coventry City in the quarterfinal of the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.

Trailing by two goals, Akinfenwa reduced the deficit after spending only ten minutes on the Ricoh Arena turf, when he fired home from eight yards after some poor defending by the Sky Blues.

With nine minutes remaining, the Nigerian attacker had a chance to draw his team level but saw his acrobatic effort go wide.

Adebayo Akinfenwa has been impressive, statistics wise, in the EFL Trophy this season, having scored in earlier matches against West Ham, Millwall and Mansfield Town prior to the encounter with Coventry City.

The 34-year-old is widely regarded as the strongest Nigerian player, ahead of Anderson Esiti and Hakeem Araba.

Elsewhere, Nigerian defender Omar Sowunmi came off the bench to score for Yeovil Town in their 5-2 loss to Luton Town.
