Ex-Chelsea Star Mikel Declined Invitation To Play March Friendlies Mikel declined to participate in the upcoming friendlies against Senegal and Burkina Faso due to the precarious position of Tianjin Teda in the Chinese Super League.

Netease Sports claims that the Nigeria captain was called up for the friendlies in London but had to pass up the opportunity and this was approved by manager Gernot Rohr.

Mikel argued that he hopes to take advantage of the international break and fit into the Tianjin Teda team.

The 29-year-old is Tianjin Teda’s biggest marquee signing ever and has been appointed captain of the team for the new season.

The former Chelsea midfielder has won over 70 caps and scored 5 goals for his country since debuting in August 2005.

Tianjin Teda have one point from their first two matches in the Chinese top division.
