Bristol City 2 Man Utd 1: Nigerian Trio Absent, Argentina GK Concedes Twice
Published: December 20, 2017
Bristol City pulled off one of the biggest cup upset in their 2-1 win over Manchester United at Ashton Gate on Wednesday evening, advancing to the semifinals at the expense of the Red Devils who would hardly believe the unlikely defeat.
Tosin Kehinde missed out on the Red Devils travelling party after featuring for the U23s in their 1-1 draw with Leicester City U23s on Monday, alongside Matthew Olosunde who recently made a return from a long injury lay-off.
Kel Akpobire was also not available for Bristol City, having turned out for the youth side on Monday.
The Championship high-flyers nearly took a shock lead barely seven minutes in, Joshua Brownhill forcing Argentina international goalkeeper Sergio Romero into a smart save from a setpiece after a Paul Pogba foul.
The less enthralling first half saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford rattle the woodwork as Jose Mourinho's side came inches away from opening the scoring.
Joe Bryan stunned their opponents with a venomous opener six minutes after the restart, the striker thumping into the top corner from a Marlon Pack assist.
The Robins lasted for barely seven minutes, as Ibrahimovic stepped up to slam home a freekick from just outside of the box and restored parity.
But Bristol City had the last laugh with a last-gasp goal which ultimately sealed their progression, Corey Smith hammering in following a wonderfully worked move to dump their more illustrious opponents out of the competition.
