Nigeria's Long-Shot Specialist Oliseh On That World Cup Goal Vs Spain: It Was Special
Published: April 29, 2018
When the Super Eagles faced Spain in their first group match of the 1998 World Cup, it took a moment of brilliance to end Spanish resistance with Sunday Oliseh's bolt from the blue giving the Nigerians a 3-2 win.
Oliseh admitted that the Nigerian national team were low on confidence heading into the tournament in France after losing three pre-World Cup friendlies against Germany, Yugoslavia and the Netherlands.
Fernando Hierro met a long throw from the right with a powerful header out of the penalty area, but the ball fell to Sunday Oliseh who scored with a shot from 30 yards
''It was a very special game because in the build up to the game everything was against us,'' Oliseh told Channels Sports
''You know our country Nigeria, when everybody writes us off that we pull surprises.
''That game itself was important for us to win because we lost all friendly games prior to that. For me particularly to score the winning goal, how do you want me to explain that?''.
Sunday Oliseh made eight starts in total for the Super Eagles at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, helping the country advance to the last sixteen in both tourneys.
