Iwobi Will Not Reach 100-Game Milestone This Season As Arsenal's UEL Run Ends
Published: May 03, 2018
Diego Costa struck the only goal of the game to send Arsene Wenger and Arsenal packing from the UEFA Europa League in their second leg meeting at the Wanda Metropolitano on Thursday evening.
Alex Iwobi who brushed aside injury worries to be included in the visitors traveling party was not afforded game time from the bench in the clash.
With 95 matches under his belt and the Gunners left with three games to contest in the Premier League, it means the Nigeria international will not reach the 100-game milestone this season.
Arsenal needed a victory after coughing up their lead in London last week but it proved more misery as they were undone by one moment of lapse in defensive concentration just before the referee blew for halftime, failing to deal with a lofted pass from Antoine Griezmann which Diego Costa lifted past Arsenal goalie, David Ospina.
Danny Welbeck and Granit Xhaka had second half chances for the Gunners but failed to make the most of it while Griezmann and Fernando Torres went close at the other end for the hosts.
Los Rojiblancos remained defensively resolute, thwarting the waves of attacks made at them to ensure Arsenal would return home empty handed.
Iwobi was afforded six appearances in the course of the competition this season, logging a total of 334 minutes.
