Super Eagles Official: South Africa Game Is About AFCON Not Revenge Mission
Published: November 13, 2018
Media officer of the Super Eagles Toyin Ibitoye has reflected the thoughts of head coach Gernot Rohr ahead of Saturday's 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa and assured Nigerians that the players will be gunning for victory in a bid to qualify for the AFCON in Cameroon.
Ibitoye spoke to Smooth FM Lagos on Tuesday evening from Asaba where the Eagles are in camp in preparation for the game this weekend.
"People are talking about revenge but it will be a professional approach by the players. First of all, the game is a qualifier for the Africa Cup of Nations," Ibitoye disclosed.
South Africa defeated Nigeria 2-0 on 10 June 2017 in their first game of the 2019 AFCON qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
Ibitoye informed that the Super Eagles will have five training sessions before flying to Johannesburg.
"For our itinerary, we trained twice today (Tuesday) and will also train twice tomorrow (Wednesday) and will train just once on Thursday. We shall leave Thursday evening and have our mandatory training at the match venue in Johannesburg on Friday.
"The team will leave very early Sunday morning so we can rest adequately before trainings resume for Tuesday's friendly (against Uganda)," Ibitoye revealed.
The Eagles will book a ticket to next year's Africa Cup of Nations with a win.
