Sodje Hails Impressive Super Eagles Players, Calls For More Top Friendlies
Published: March 31, 2019
Former Nigeria international Sam Sodje has heaped plaudits on the Super Eagles players that prosecuted the recent games against Seychelles and Egypt and also called on the Nigeria Football Federation to ensure that more top notch friendly matches are arranged for the Super Eagles ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Sodje was in Asaba to watch the Eagles face Seychelles in a dead rubber 2019 AFCON qualifier and the friendly against Egypt four days later at the Stephen Keshi Stadium.
"The Super Eagles and the U-23 Eagles entertained us and it was good to see a few additions to the team impress," Sodje who had four international caps for Nigeria stated.
"Despite being somewhat inconsequential for the fact that the team had already qualified for the Nations Cup, the first team players coming together was okay and I hope to see our national team play some more big teams in quality friendly matches before the Nations Cup.
Sodje who starred for English clubs Charlton Athletic, West Brom and Portsmouth considers chances handed to new players as being fair but adds that it must be with caution.
"Of course it will be nice to watch new players but at this time the coach cannot be inviting too many of them now if you ask me.
"The ones that were invited for Seychelles and Egypt like Valentine Ozornwafor and Paul Onuachu did well. Maybe just one or two more but basically the team for the Nations Cup is nearly complete," Sodje told allnigeriasoccer.com.
The Super Eagles will know their AFCON group foes on April 12 when the draws are conducted at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
