Can Alex Iwobi Surpass Okocha's AFCON Goalscoring Record?
Published: June 14, 2019
African Cup Of Nations history isn't complete if Austin Okocha's name isn't mentioned based on his wonderful achievements on the field of play.
Though he didn't score too many AFCON goals, his defense-splitting passes, dribbling skills, set-piece abilities and his massive creativity are some of the reasons why he's listed among the best players who have graced the tournament in time past.
The midfield wizard managed seven goals from four AFCON tournaments, including four goals during the 2004 edition which made him the tournament's joint top scorer.
The former Bolton Wanderers star won't be present in this year's competition but all eyes will be on his nephew Alex Iwobi to see if he can surpass his uncle's achievements.
Iwobi didn't hide his desire to follow his uncle's footstep by helping Nigeria lift the trophy in Egypt, but the question is can he score seven goals in three group games (at least).
The 23-year-old may be deployed in an attacking midfield position by Rohr which will provide him with an opportunity to shoot at goal whenever there's space.
Game time will also play a huge part, hence, Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr is an important factor that will determine whether Iwobi can actually surpass his uncle's seven-goal tally or not.
The Hale End Academy product obviously possesses quick feet, great pace, wonderful dribbling skills like his uncle, but it seems too early to predict the number of goals he will score in Egypt.
