RB Leipzig battle Newcastle United for German-born Nigerian defender
Published: August 26, 2021RB Leipzig are battling Newcastle United to sign Hertha Berlin's German-born Nigerian defender Jordan Torunarigha.
The Magpies were recently credited with an interest in the former Germany youth international but were facing competition from unnamed German Bundesliga clubs.
German newspaper Sport Bild via ligainsider has revealed the identity of one of his suitors in Germany, noting that Torunarigha is among the candidates with regards to defensive reinforcements at RB Leipzig.
Leipzig are planning for life without Marcel Halstenberg who is being linked with a departure from the Red Bull Arena before the summer transfer window closes.
Apart from the German-Nigerian, other players being considered to replace Halstenberg are Ozan Kabak (FC Schalke) and Jeremiah St. Juste (Mainz 05).
Torunarigha has less than two years to run on his contract with Hertha Berlin and this could be the perfect time to sell him rather than wait for his market value to depreciate.
The 24-year-old is also drawing interest from clubs in the Italian top-flight.
