The reason Super Eagles striker was left out of Genk's matchday squad opening day of the season
Published: July 28, 2022Paul Onuachu was omitted from Racing Genk's matchday squad in their opening match of the 2022-2023 season - a Belgian Pro League clash against Club Brugge last weekend.
It has come to light that it was an injury-enforced absence, which gave an opportunity to Cyriel Dessers to be named in the starting lineup.
Dutch language regional newspaper Het Belang van Limburg has informed that Racing Genk manager Wouter Vrancken is still sweating over the fitness of Onuachu ahead of his side's first home game of the season against Standard Liege.
Genk's leading scorer last season, Onuachu is struggling with an adductor injury and is still training individually, putting his participation in doubt.
The Smurfs medical team do not want to rush him back into action to avoid suffering a relapse of the injury.
For all the individual awards he has won in Belgian over the past two seasons, Onuachu would be disappointed that his dream of playing for a top European club hasn't worked out.
The 28-year-old has two years left on his contract with the four-time Belgian champions.
