 EPL wrap : Iwobi, Aribo, Iheanacho, Ndidi, Olise beaten at home; Edozie full debut;Onyeka missing

Allnigeriasoccer.com's round-up of Nigeria-eligible players that were in action for their respective clubs In the English Premier League on Boxing day, Monday 26 December 2022.  

 

Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi played for 90 minutes in Everton's 2-1 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Goodison Park. 

 

Iwobi however failed to add to his one goal so far this season for Everton albeit he found the net in three of his previous four matches in the league against Wolves. 

 

Everton took an early lead seven minutes into the first half after Yeri Mina headed home from McNeil's corner.

 

Wolves equalised 15 minutes later through Podence who finished with a half volley inside the opposition box as he latched onto a Joao Moutinho lofted pass.  Substitute Rayan Ait-Nouri scored a late winner for Wolves. 

 

The duo of Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise started at Selhurst Park as nine-man Crystal  Palace were beaten 3-0 by Fulham. 

 

Fulham winger winger Bobby Reid put the Cottagers ahead with half an hour played while Tim Ream crashed home the ball with a half-volleyed finish after Mitrovic's deflected nod-down 19 minutes before fulltime. 

 

Mitrovic then scored the third goal for Fulham after he was involved in their first two goals.

 

At the King Power Stadium, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho were omitted from the starting line up for Leicester City but played the last 20 minutes of action as they welcomed high-flying Newcastle United. 

 

Newcastle went up 1-0 in the minute when Ghana international Daniel Amartey brought down Joelinton and a penalty was awarded to the Toons. 

 

Chris Wood took the kick from 12 yards and played the ball straight at goal with goalkeeper Danny Ward diving to his left side.

 

Paraguayan star Miguel Almiron scored the second goal for the visitors with a brilliant finish seven minutes into the game.

 

Joelinton made victory certain for Newcastle 13 minutes before the break 

 

 Iheanacho and Ndidi then came off the bench in the 70th and 72nd minutes for Harvey Barnes and Boubakary Soumaré   respectively.

 

Iheanacho wasted no time to attempt an effort on goal but the wide went agonizingly wide off target.

 

Former Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo came off the bench in place of Moussa Djenepo in Southampton's 3-1 home defeat to Brighton & Hove at St Mary's stadium just after the break.

 

The Nigerian international was however yellow-carded with an hour played for a harsh challenge on Pascal Gross.

 

On his full Premier League debut, Anglo-Nigerian youngster Sam Edozie was in action for 84 minutes before he was replaced by Adam Armstrong.

 

Earlier in the day, Brentford played out a 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at the Gtech Community Stadium but Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka who has played 12 league games so far this season was not named in the squad.

 

After Vitaly Janelt and Ivan Toney fired the home side into a two-goal lead, Harry Kane pulled one back on 65 minutes nd Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg equalized in the 71st minute.
