No belated birthday present : Super Eagles midfielder will not make return against Liverpool
Published: January 02, 2023
Super Eagles star Frank Onyeka will not be available for selection when Brentford take on Liverpool in a Premier League game at the Gtech Community Stadium on Tuesday under the lights.
A return to the starting lineup would have been a perfect belated birthday present for the FC Ebedei product who celebrated his 25th birthday on New Year's Day.
The Bees sent Onyeka birthday wishes on Sunday, labeling the combative midfielder, 'The Tank', a nickname he was first given during his time at his first European club FC Midtjylland.
Onyeka has not sufficiently recovered from a hamstring injury that saw him miss Brentford's mid-season friendlies with Bordeaux, Celta Vigo and Wolfsburg last month, and back-to-back London derbies against Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.
It would have been his fourth career appearance against Liverpool had he been available for selection.
Onyeka shone in two Champions League matches against Jurgen Klopp's team back in the 2020-2021 season, before starring again in a Premier League game on September 25, 2021.
He missed Brentford's last game with the Reds in January 2022 due to international commitments with the Nigeria side at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
