Chelsea 0 Man City 1 : Woodwork denies Chukwuemeka first Premier League goal
Published: January 05, 2023
Chelsea were defeated 1-0 at Stamford Bridge Thursday night by second-placed Manchester City who narrowed Arsenal's lead to just five points.
Nigeria-eligible midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka was handed his fifth game of the season Thursday evening in the Premier League fixture against champions, Manchester City.
Chukwuemeka was introduced midway through the first half as a replacement for the injured Christian Pulisic who pulled up after an injury.
The early setback was the second of the game suffered by the Blues after Raheem Sterling had to leave the pitch with a hamstring injury and replaced by former Arsenal striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Moments after coming on, the young midfielder had his shot in the City box blocked by John Stones who earlier thwarted Sterling against his old club.
Chukwuemeka came the closest for a resilient Chelsea side when he hit the post during the closing stages of the first 45 minutes.
Had he found the back of the net, it would have been his first Premier League goal in his nineteenth match.
However the Blues went behind in the 63rd minute through Algerian forward, Riyadh Mahrez, who profited from a, Jack Grealish cross. Mahrez slid in the ball at the far post to hand City the lead.
Two minutes into stoppage time, Chukwuemeka surged forward and found Lewis Hall on the overlap but the latter's shot went wide.
Chelsea are 10th in the table with 25 points, ten behind Manchester United who occupy the last Champions League position.
