'Showed a lot of skill' - Chelsea legend Glenn Hoddle waxes lyrical about 'intelligent' Madueke
Published: February 04, 2023
Chelsea legend Glenn Hoddle was excited about the performance of Chukwunonso Madueke as the Blues were held to a goalless draw by Fulham in a Premier League match at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.
The England U21 international of Nigerian descent joined Chelsea two weeks before the London derby but was not available to face Liverpool at Anfield because his registration was not completed on time.
Against the Cottagers, manager Graham Potter introduced Madueke off the bench at halftime as a replacement for big-money signing Mykhailo Mudryk for his Premier League and Chelsea debut.
Madueke started on the left but switched to the right wing in a tactical reshuffle following the introduction of Raheem Sterling.
Hoddle noted that the 20-year-old tried to make things happen after entering the game as a substitute and praised him for his football intelligence.
Speaking on Premier League Productions post-match, Hoddle said : "Mason Mount found it a little bit difficult but straightaway the kid's (Madueke) come on and done more than Mudryk.
"At the end of the day that is a fantastic way for him to start his Chelsea career, the things that he did coming off the line, there are things you can't coach, it's intelligence.
"He showed a lot of intelligence, he showed a lot of skill on the ball, he's got pace.
"He looked to me as if he had end product. Everything he tried to do was really positive."
Madueke has signed a seven-and-a-half-year contract with Chelsea, with the club holding the option for an additional twelve months.
