'Has problems with his grip' - Manu Garba delivers brutally honest assessment of Flying Eagles GK
Published: February 05, 2023
Former Golden Eaglets head coach, Manu Garba, has given his assessment of the goalkeeping performance of the U-20 national team first choice keeper, Nathaniel Nwosu.
Nwosu's recent game for the seven-time African champions was the 4-2 win in the tune-up friendly against Zambia at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.
Nwosu was the team's number 1 choice at the WAFU Zone B tournament that culminated in the qualification to the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Onetime Gombe United coach, Manu Garba who was the head coach of the victorious U-17 side that won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2013, spoke to sports journalists on the observations from the performances of Nwosu leading up to the AFCON in little over two weeks time.
"We also noticed that," Garba concurred in reference to the goalkeeping gaffe of the keeper as noticed in recent matches.
"I think the boy has problems with his grips. On several occasions some harmless balls came and he could not grip the ball.
"I spoke to Baruwa, the goalkeeper coach, to work on those mistakes and as a tall goalkeeper too there was a ball they gave to him that he controlled with his leg, he slowed down and the attacker almost won the ball from him.
Manu Garba further added that Nwosu needs to improve on another key aspect of his game.
"He should be very quick too when it comes to distributing the ball with his legs too.
"Above all the greatest mistake from him today is his grips and I think the goalkeeper coach will do a great deal to work on those grips," Garba stressed.
The Flying Eagles will be hoping to finish in the semifinals stage and book one of Africa's four spots as representatives at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia this summer.
