Potter names Super Eagles-eligible player in Chelsea's travelling squad for Borussia Dortmund
Published: February 14, 2023Manager Graham Potter included Super Eagles-eligible player Carney Chukwuemeke in Chelsea's traveling squad to Germany ahead of their UEFA Champions League meeting with Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park.
With UEFA permitting clubs to name twenty three players in their matchday squad, it is a foregone conclusion that the England U20 international of Nigerian descent will be involved in some capacity against the German Bundesliga side on Wednesday night, barring an injury in the pre-match warmup .
Chukwuemeka is competing with Conor Gallagher, Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mateo Kovacic and Enzo Fernandez for one of the spots in central midfield.
The 19-year-old would have been in contention to make his Champions League debut against Dinamo Zagreb in November with Chelsea already through as Group E winners, but he was sidelined by a hamstring injury.
Chukwuemeka has not figured for Chelsea in a competitive match since his substitute appearance against Liverpool on January 21.
He has received four call-ups for Champions League matches without getting off the bench.
Players absent from the trip include another player of Nigerian descent, Nonso Madueke, who has not been registered for the knockout rounds of the Champions League, after joining from PSV Eindhoven last month.
