Why Osimhen is not replicating Napoli form for Nigeria - former Super Eagles midfielder
Published: February 14, 2023
Former Nigeria international, Friday Ekpo has offered explanations on why Victor Osimhen is not replicating his club form in the national team.
Super Eagles striker, Osimhen has scored 17 league goals this season in the Serie A and is already in the conversation for the African Footballer of the Year award for the year 2022.
The Napoli hitman is attracting interest from Premier League sides, Chelsea and Manchester United ahead of the summer transfer window.
Speaking on Brila FM on Tuesday, Ekpo, who was part of the Super Eagles side that were runners up at the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria said:
"When the coach is assembling the team, they don't spend an awful lot of time. So there should not be too much pressure in him to play for the Super Eagles as much as he does at Napoli.
"Osimhen is not a one man riot. At his club, they understand him because they play regularly. That's a huge difference.
"The Super Eagles coach should put on his thinking cap and have many good options in the striker position," the former Nigeria midfielder stressed.
Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro has alternative options in attack like Paul Onuachu and Terem Moffi who have been impressive for their clubs in Europe.
Onuachu had been in great form for former club, Genk before joining Southampton in the English Premier League while Moffi has been prolific in the Ligue 1.
Osimhen scored his latest Napoli goal in the 3-0 win over Cremonose last weekend.
