On hot streak : Hale End product Akpom scores 17th league goal as Boro beat Sheffield United
Published: February 16, 2023
Arsenal's Hale End Academy product Chuba Akpom continued his amazing goalscoring form after finding the net as Middlesbrough registered a 3-1 road win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night.
The Super Eagles hopeful has been firing on all cylinders since the appointment of Manchester United legend Michael Carrick as manager of Boro and his first half strike took his tally in the Championship to seventeen goals.
Since the start of 2023, the Boro striker has mustered six goals in eight games across all competitions.
Oliver McBurnie headed in the opening goal for the Blades in the fifth minute but Akpom leveled natters when he powered the ball into the bottom corner in the 25th minute to ensure the teams were all square at the end of the first half.
Akpom could have scored again before the interval but his shot was saved by Sheffield United goalkeeper Foderingham.
Two minutes into the second half, Cameron Archer lashed the ball into the roof of the net for 2-1 and Boro wrapped up proceedings in the 74th minute, with their number 10 grabbing his second goal of the game.
In the race for the top scorer award in the Championship, Akpom leads the way followed by Coventry City's Viktor Gyökeres (13), Burnley's Nathan Tella (12), Luton Town's Carlton Morris (12) and Hull City's Óscar Estupiñán (12).
Middlesbrough currently sit third in the standings with 54 points from 32 games ahead of their home game against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.
