How Kepa helped Adeyemi to score Dortmund match-winner v Chelsea - Ex- Nigeria striker
Published: February 16, 2023
German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund won the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg tie against Chelsea on Wednesday night, with cap-tied Germany international of Nigerian descent. Karim Adeyemi netting the only goal of the game in the second half.
In the 63rd minute, Guerreiro initiated a counter with a long ball towards Adeyemi, who sprinted from inside his own half, beat the backtracking Fernández and then rounded the Chelsea goalkeeper.
Reacting to Adeyemi's goal, former Nigeria international, Efan Ekoku, who was on commentary duties for the Champions League world feed, apportioned blame to Kepa Arrizabalaga, saying that the Chelsea goalkeeper made the task easier for the Borussia Dortmund striker.
"You get exhausted at the end of it. Starting with you have to do something special. Kepa actually helped him by coming out," the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner with the Super Eagles of Nigeria stated.
"Presumed that's the right thing to do but made his mind up.
"He (Adeyemi) didn't have too much time to think after passing Fernandez. He just passed the goalkeeper, empty net," Ekoku observed from the commentary box.
Carney Chukwuemeka was a non-playing substitute for the fifth time this season in the Champions League while January signing Chukwunonso Madueke has not been registered for the competition and stayed back in England.
