Middlesbrough goal poacher Akpom continues to write the headlines after brace v QPR
Published: February 18, 2023
Championship's leading marksman Chuba Akpom continued his purple patch in front of goal by netting a brace as Middlesbrough defeated Queens Park Rangers 3-1 at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday.
After a difficult start to his career at Boro, the Hale End Academy graduate has had his swagger back this season and has replicated his scoring form for Arsenal's youth teams.
Three days after equaling Patrick Bamford's record of seventeen league goals in a single campaign for Middlesbrough, the Nigerian striker has now exceeded the tally with his goals against the Hoops.
Akpom guided a header into the bottom corner to break the deadlock after a cross was floated in from the right by Dan Barlaser in the 64th minute.
With the goal at his mercy, Akpom missed from the spot in the 77th minute but he made amends within seconds as he swept home the rebound to double Boro's advantage.
The Boro number 29 was close to getting his second hat-trick of the season in the 82nd minute but the Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper somehow managed to save his powerful effort.
After Ilias Chair pulled one back for the visitors, Riley McGree put the seal on things in stoppage time.
In the race for the Championship Golden Boot, Akpom is five goals ahead of Coventry City's Viktor Gyökeres, who has 14 goals to his name.
