Chelsea sign United Kingdom's youngest-ever senior footballer
Published: February 19, 2023English Premier League giants Chelsea have completed the signing of talented Northern Irish attacking midfielder Christopher Atherton, and there's a bit of history associated with his name.
When Atherton made his senior debut for Glenavon versus Dollingstown in a JBE League Cup tie on September 13th 2022, he became the youngest ever senior footballer in the United Kingdom at 13 years and 329 days.
He broke the previous record held by Eamon Collins who was 14 years and 323 days.when he made his debut for Blackpool in 1980.
After coming off the bench for the last fifteen minutes, Atherton endeared himself further to the Glenavon fans by providing the assist for the team's sixth goal with his first touch of the ball.
Now 14, he has opted to join Chelsea after trialing across several high profile clubs in England, according to Blues insider, Chelsea Youth.
Atherton was thirteen years when he made his debut for Northern Ireland U16 national team.
