Chelsea's need for new Drogba : Ex-Scotland star reveals Osimhen could be the answer
Published: February 21, 2023
Retired Scotland international Pat Nevin has revealed that Victor Osimhen could be the answer to Chelsea's search for a striker similar to club legend Didier Drogba.
The Stamford Bridge outfit are in the market for a proven goalscorer this summer, with the future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang up in the air.
RB Leipzig sensation Christopher Nkunku is expected to complete his move to Stamford Bridge when the transfer market reopens for business but the France international is not an an out-and-out center forward.
Chelsea have been toothless in attack this season, netting 23 goals in 23 matches in the Premier League, an issue that must be addressed before the start of next season, but it has to be the right signing.
The Blues have made some weird striker signings in the past, bringing in the likes of Alexandre Pato, Claudio Pizarro, Hernan Crespo, Andriy Shevchenko and Samuel Eto'o.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Nevin said : "Everybody knows they need somebody to put the ball in the net. That would help a wee bit.
They could go out and sign a striker, but Chelsea’s history of buying strikers at the wrong end of their career is extraordinary.
"They want somebody at the right end of their career who can become like Didier Drogba. I would get Victor Osimhen from Napoli if it was up to me."
Osimhen is in the form of his life, having scored in seven consecutive matches in the Italian Serie A ahead of Napoli's UEFA Champions League clash at Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday night.
