'He's not' - Paul Merson insists Madueke is not a better player than Sterling, Pulisic
Published: February 25, 2023Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has insisted that he's not pleased with the overall performance of Noni Madueke since his winter transfer to Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven.
Merson also criticized another January signing, Mykhailo Mudryk, saying the former FC Shakhtar Donetsk winger has not lived up to the hype after catching the eye on his debut against Liverpool.
As part of Chelsea's Vision 2030 project. England U21 international of Nigerian descent, Madueke joined Chelsea on a seven-and-a-half-year contract, with a club option for the 2030-2031 season.
The ex-PSV star made his Premier League debut against Fulham, before starting back-to-back matches with West Ham and Southampton.
Merson has suggested that the Anglo-Nigerian winger is not an upgrade on Christian Pulisic and Raheem Sterling, claiming that he has not made an impact.
In quotes relayed by Tribalfootball, citing Sky Sports, Merson said : "They brought Mykhailo Mudryk for £88m and, bar a cameo of 20 minutes, he's shown nothing. I mean nothing.
"You wouldn't expect to need time to settle in at that price.
"The forward-thinking players are no better than the ones they've already got so what's the point? You can't tell me that Noni Madueke is a better player than Raheem Sterling or Christian Pulisic. He's not.
"Why are you buying a load of players that aren't better than what you've got? None of them improve the team bar Enzo Fernandez and the centre-half [Benoit Badiashile]."
Chelsea are currently tenth in the Premier League, which is not the position they want to be as they are keen on playing in the UEFA Champions League next season.
