Flying Eagles-eligible striker goal knocks Liverpool out of Premier League International Cup
Published: April 01, 2023A goal from Flying Eagles-eligible striker Victor Akinwale eleven minutes before the end of the first half was enough for Crystal Palace to send Liverpool U21s out of the Premier League International Cup on Friday.
Akinwale scored his goal brilliantly after he beat Liverpool centre-back Billy Koumetio to a long ball and rounded Reds goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga before burying the ball in the back of the net.
The Young Reds protested because they felt the Nigerian had fouled Koumetio in the build-up to the goal but the goal was allowed to stand by the referee.
Akinwale has now registered seven goals in all competitions for the young Eagles.
Other Nigeria-eligible players that featured for the young Eagles were Ademola Ola-Adebomi, David Uzoh and Tayo Adaramola, while David Omilabu was an unused substitute.
Featuring for Liverpool was another Nigerian eligible player, Oludare Olufunwa, who played at right back and was substituted in the 68th minute by Owen Beck.
Crystal Palace will now join Fulham, Valencia and PSV Eindhoven for the semifinals of the competition.
The Premier League International Cup is organized by the Premier League and contested by twelve U23 Premier League sides and twelve other sides from other leagues in Europe.
