Announcement imminent : Blues legend to coach Super Eagles-eligible duo at Chelsea on interim basis
Published: April 05, 2023After the speculation linking Luis Enrique heavily to the vacant Chelsea job, a new name has emerged as favorite to be the caretaker manager.
According to The Athletic UK, Chelsea have reached an agreement in principle to appoint Frank Lampard as their new head coach on an interim basis until the end of the season.
The England and Chelsea legend is currently out of job after he was sacked by Everton in January 2023.
Lampard, who played 648 times for Chelsea and is the club's all-time top scorer with 211 goals, coached the Blues from the summer of 2019 to the end of January 2021 before being replaced by Thomas Tuchel.
The 44-year-old will begin coaching Super Eagles-eligible duo Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke in the coming days.
The England youth internationals of Nigerian descent found game time hard to come by when the dismissed Graham Potter was at the helm, with the winger making only two starts in the Premier League and the central midfielder recording one.
Lampard worked with several Chelsea academy products in his first spell as Chelsea coach including ex- Nigerian Federation targets Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori, and handed Faustino Anjorin his debuts in the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Per the report from The Athletic, Ashley Cole, Joe Edwards and Chris Jones are set to join Lampard at Chelsea as part of his backroom staff.
