Hale End products Akpom, Tella beaten to Championship award by Coventry City striker
Published: April 07, 2023Arsenal's Hale End Academy products Chuba Akpom and Nathan Tella have missed out on the Championship Player of the Month for March 2023, with the English Football League announcing on Friday that Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres has won the monthly award.
Sweden international Gyokeres took home the prize after registering six goal involvements (3 goals, 3 assists) last month.
Akpom, the leading scorer in the Championship with 25 goals, was nominated for the Championship Player of the Month on the back of his fine form for Middlesbrough.
The 27-year-old has found the net in each of his last five matches in the division and is aiming to become the first Middlesbrough.player to score in seven consecutive matches at the Riverside Stadium in today's fixture against Burnley.
Tella also enjoyed a successful month in March, scoring five goals in four outings in the Championship, including a hat-trick against Hull City and a brace versus Wigan Athletic, taking his tally in the division to seventeen.
Having missed out on the EFL Championship Player of the Month, Akpom and Tella have been nominated for another monthly accolade - PFA Vertu Motors Fans' Player of the Month award for March.
The Nigerian strikers face competition from Coventry City's Victor Gyökeres, Middlesbrough's Cameron Archer, Sheffield United's Tommy Doyle and Stoke City's Ki-Jana Hoever.
