Arsenal product Akpom surpasses Yakubu, makes history after goal in Boro's loss to Burnley

Arsenal's Hale End Academy product Chuba Akpom made a bit of history on Good Friday as he became the first Middlesbrough player to score in seven consecutive matches at the Riverside Stadium.

However, Akpom's goal counted for nothing as Boro lost 2-1 to Burnley, who sealed their promotion to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Prior to the Clarets' visit to TS3 6RS, Akpom had scored in six games on the bounce at Boro's home ground, level with ex-Nigeria star Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Hamilton Ricard.

He set a new record two minutes into the second half after converting a penalty awarded when Cameron Archer was brought down in the box and brought the game back to parity in the process.

Twelve minutes into the contest, Ashley Barnes got Vincent Kompany's team a step closer to the Premier League when he flicked the ball past Middlesbrough goalkeeper Zack Steffen, and the goal stood though replays appeared to show the Burnley number 10 was in an offside position.

Super Eagles-eligible winger Nathan Tella played a key role in Burnley's return to the Premier League as the Southampton loanee set up the game-winning goal for Connor Roberts in the 66th minute.

In stoppage time, Akpom could have spoiled Burnley's promotion party, only for him to nod wide of the target.

Akpom has found the net in six consecutive matches in the Championship and tops the scoring charts in the division with 26 goals, eight more than second-placed Viktor Gyökeres of Coventry City.
