U20 World Cup : Chelsea star, two other players of Nigerian descent in England 21-man squad
Published: May 11, 2023The English Football Association have announced the Young Lions roster for the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup with three Nigeria-eligible players part of the group heading to Argentina in the coming days.
Head coach Ian Foster has picked Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, Brentford fullback Daniel Oyegoke and Southampton winger Samuel Edozie in his 21-man squad list.
Chukwuemeka and Oyegoke were both in the Young Lions squad that won the 2022 European U19 Championship, which acted as the UEFA qualifiers for the FIFA U20 World Cup.
Edozie has forced his way into the squad after impressing in friendly matches, he netted on his U20 debut versus Chile before scoring his second goal for the age group in a 3-0 win over Australia.
Aston Villa midfielder Tim Iroegbunam, Crystal Palace duo Owen Goodman and Malcolm Ebiowei, and Celtic goalkeeper Tobi Oluwayemi who all have caps for England U20s have not been selected in the World Cup squad.
England's opener is against Tunisia in Buenos Aires on May 22, before facing Uruguay on May 22, and their final group match with Iraq is on May 28.
Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman was an influential member of the England team that won the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup, ane he was joined in the squad by five other players of Nigerian descent - Golden Ball winner Dominic Solanke, Fikayo Tomori, Josh Onomah, Sheyi Ojo and Ovie Ejaria.
