'Didn't do anything' - Ex-Man Utd star Hargreaves admits Onuachu's transfer did not work out
Published: May 13, 2023It was a bitter afternoon for all concerned at Southampton as their 11-year stay in the Premier League came to an end following a 2-0 loss to Fulham at the St Mary's Stadium.
Appointed to manage Southampton in February, the young Spaniard Rubén Sellés had very little experience at that level to prevent the Saints from going down.
Southampton have been struggling all season as they have been in the bottom three since November, and knowing they were in te danger of being relegated, they added attacking reinforcements to the squad in the January transfer window.
Paul Onuachu, Kamaldeen Sulemana and Carlos Alcaraz were acquired from Racing Genk, Rennes and Racing Club respectively for a combined fee of 56.65 million euros.
Only four goals were scored between the three players, all of them coming from the boots of the young Argentine, Alcaraz.
Onuachu scored goals for fun in Belgium but struggled to adapt to the demands of the Premier League as he has not managed to find the back of the net in eleven matches.
Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves stated the obvious when he revealed that the transfer of the Super Eagles striker to Southampton has not worked out as planned.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Hargreaves said : "The only one in Janaury that had an impact was Alcaraz, he was fantastic.
"When you think about Sulemana he didn't do anything. Onuachu did not do anything. It was a nice idea but it didn't work out for them."
Onuachu refused to comment on whether or not there was a relegation clause in his contract while on international duty with the Nigeria national team in March.
