Sheffield Wednesday sweating on fitness of 2019 Flying Eagles invitee ahead of playoff final
Published: May 22, 2023Sheffield Wednesday are sweating on the fitness of 2019 Flying Eagles invitee Fisayo Dele-Bashiru ahead of their League One playoff final clash against Barnsley at Wembley.
The Manchester City academy product was a surprise omission from the gameday squad against Peterborough United on May 18 as the Owls created history by becoming the first team in Football League playoff history to progress to the final despite losing the first leg of the semi-final by a four-goal margin.
It has come to light that Dele-Bashiru was left out of the squad because he suffered a training ground injury before the playoff semifinal second leg tie.
There is huge speculation over the future of the talented midfielder with his contract running out at the end of the season.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore is hopeful that the Nigerian prospect will shake off the injury in time for the South Yorkshire derby against Barnsley at the National Stadium.
Asked why Dele-Bashiru wasn't in the 18 against Peterborough United, Moore told YorkshireLive: "He took a knock in training yesterday. There was a clash and he took a knock and hurt the top of his knee.
"He came in this morning and wasn't able to shake it off. Hopefully he'll be back (for Wembley)."
The 22-year-old trained with Nigeria's U20 national team in Poland ahead of the 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup but was not picked in the final 21-man squad for the tournament in Poland.
