Iheanacho becomes first African player to win Leicester City POTS since Mahrez in 2016
Published: May 31, 2023Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho has been awarded Leicester City's Player of the Season for 2022-2023.
Despite Leicester City's struggles which led to their relegation to the Championship, Iheanacho stood out among his peers with 5 goals and five assists in 28 appearances in the Premier League.
The Nigerian striker also bagged 3 goals in 3 appearances in the FA Cup which ensured he finished the season with 8 goals and five assists in all competitions.
The 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner found the net in wins over Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, and helped the Foxes reach the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup with goals against Gillingham FC and Walsall.
The 26-year-old goal contributions in the Premier League is laudable because he started only 11 games and came on as a substitute in 17 games.
The former Manchester City striker is the first Nigerian to win Leicester City's Player of the Year and the first African to win the award since Algerian forward, Riyad Mahrez did same in 2016.
He also joins Mahrez as only the two Africans to have received the award in the history of the club.
