Keep, sell or loan: What does the future hold for 2019 Nigeria U23 invitee at Celtic?
Published: June 25, 2023It is almost two years since 2019 Nigeria's Olympic national team invitee, Osaze Urhoghide moved from Sheffield Wednesday to Scottish giants Celtic and has made only one appearance for the club
Urhoghide arrived at Celtic as a 20-year-old with a lot of potential having attracted the English outfits Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Jupiler Pro League side, Club Brugge.
Due to his lack of game time, he was sent out on loan to Belgium-based club KV Oostende in the second half of the 2021-2022 season and his loan term was extended to the entirety of the 2022/2023 season.
Oostende have passed up the opportunity to sign the Dutch-born central defender on a full deal following their relegation to the second tier, so what does Celtic do with him?
He recorded good defensive numbers in a very poor Oostende side last season but he is not an upgrade on Celtic's centre-back options at the moment.
The Hoops' center-back pairing of Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers recorded the lowest number of goals conceded in the Scottish Premiership last season while Yuki Kobayashi and Stephen Welsh have proven to be good back-ups.
More so, the aforementioned defenders are still in their prime years with Starfelt being the oldest being 28-year-old which also makes the idea of "replacing an aging leg" unripe at the moment.
Therefore, it will be in the interest of Celtic and Urhoghide to part ways this summer.
By doing so, the club will able to make some money and the player will be able to get a permanent move to a club where he can play regularly and keep developing.
