'Could be a risk worth taking' - Pundit delivers verdict on Birmingham-linked striker Maja
Published: July 05, 2023Football journalist Declan Harte has given his verdict on the pursuit of former Bordeaux striker Josh Maja by Birmingham City, saying that it is a risk worth taking for the club to sign the Nigerian striker
Maja is keen on returning to England after the expiration of his deal with French Ligue 2 side Bordeaux and has been linked with the Blues.
The Super Eagles star started his professional career with Sunderland , for whom he made 49 appearances and scored 17 goals.
He left the Stadium of Light in 2019 for Bordeaux on a four-and-half-year deal but struggled to hit the ground running.
The 24-year-old returned to England to play for Fulham and Stoke City on separate loan deals, scoring 5 goals in 32 appearances combined for both teams.
He finally turned his career on its head last season as he mustering 17 goals in all competitions for Bordeaux which made the Girondins attempt to keep him by offering a new contract which he refused.
Birmingham recorded 47 goals last season in the Championship are hoping to improve their fortune in front of goal with the signing of the Super Eagles forward.
"Birmingham need a consistent threat in front of goal to really improve this season, and Maja could be a smart solution to that problem," Declan Harte told Football League World.
"His previous record in England was quite poor outside of one good campaign with Sunderland in League One.
"But he has improved enough in the last 12 months to think this could be a risk worth taking for the Blues given the low cost of the deal."
The former Manchester City youth teamer is also on the radar of Scottish, Belgian and French teams this window.
