Fabrizio Romano confirms Athletic Bilbao have signed Liverpool winger Gift on '5-year' deal
Published: July 09, 2023Italian transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Spanish-born Nigerian winger Elijah Gift has ended his association with Premier League club Liverpool by signing a long-term contract with La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao.
Romano informed on Sunday that Gift has put pen to paper on a 'five-year contract' that ties him to Athletic Bilbao until June 2028.
Legally, the deal is only valid until June 30, 2026, so it is assumed that he has signed a three-year contract with an option for two additional seasons.
Fifa's regulations on the status and transfer of players state that 'players under the age of 18 may not sign a professional contract for a term longer than three years and any clause referring to a longer period shall not be recognised'.
The 2006-born winger appended his signature to a multi-year contract following a successful medical and the deal will be completed upon the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate.
Born to a Spanish mother and Nigerian father, Gift moved to England at the age of nine, and was at Huddersfield before switching to Liverpool at U12 level.
Capable of playing on both flanks, the 17-year-old Gift made his debuts in the UEFA Youth League, U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup last season.
