Official: Left-sided centre-back of Nigerian descent signs new deal with Chelsea
Published: July 10, 2023Through their official website, Chelsea have announced their new intake of academy scholars for the 2023-2024 season, with a Golden Eaglets-eligible player part of the group.
As per Premier League rules, all U17 players are required to start next season on a scholarship deal before they are permitted to sign their first professional contracts.
As exclusively reported by allnigeriasoccer.com in November 2022, Saheed Olagunju was offered a scholarship by Chelsea.
The Stamford Bridge outfit confirmed today that Olagunju and seven other talented teenagers officially signed their scholarship agreements in an event held at Stamford Bridge last week.
For the forthcoming season, Nigerian football tactician Hassan Sulaiman will continue his role as Chelsea U18 coach and the former Arsenal youth teamer will be assisted by ex-Chelsea Academy graduates Andy Ross and Jimmy Smith.
Chelsea's head of youth development and recruitment, Jim Fraser describes Olagunju as a left-sided central defender, who defends the box effectively while also showcasing excellent leadership skills.
An athletic and confident player, Olagunju joined Chelsea at U12 level from Charlton Athletic, rising through the youth team ranks before making his competitive debut for the Blues U18 team in his final season as a schoolboy.
Saheed is the younger brother of Huddersfield Town central defender Mustapha Olagunju.
