'I considered them an opponent' - PL homegrown player Awoniyi reflects on scoring v Liverpool
Published: July 10, 2023Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi has revealed that he had no mixed feelings about scoring against his former club, Liverpool, as he had left his emotions behind when he left the club.
Awoniyi is considered a Premier League homegrown player as he was registered with Liverpool for three entire seasons prior to his 21st birthday.
He scored Nottingham Forest's only goal in their 1-0 win over Liverpool at the City Ground in the Premier League last season.
Awoniyi joined Liverpool in 2015 and was unable to feature in any competitive game for the Premier League giants due to work permit issues.
After several loan spells which spanned six seasons, he joined Union Berlin in the summer of 2021 on a permanent deal.
He eventually returned to England in 2022, joining newly promoted Nottingham Forest after he had impressed in the Bundesliga, notching 15 goals in 31 games.
Awoniyi stressed that he was happy to score against his former club as he had officially ended his stint at Anfield.
"The day I signed for Union Berlin, I knew I was no longer a Liverpool player, so I considered them as an opponent when we faced them," he told EaglesTracker.
"The only thing in my head was for us to win and for me to score and I was happy I scored against them.
"But the good thing was that almost everyone sent me a congratulatory message expressing how happy they were for me and my development,"
The 25-year-old Awoniyi will also go on to score against Arsenal and Chelsea later in the season and ended the campaign with 10 goals in his first season in the Premier League.
