'Brings nervousness' - Ex-Aberdeen star not convinced Balogun's return to Rangers makes sense
Published: July 16, 2023Ex-Aberdeen star Ricky Foster is not convinced that Leon Balogun's move to Glasgow Rangers makes sense.
Balogun became the Light Blues' seventh signing on Wednesday, joining as a free agent following the expiry of his contract with EFL Championship side, Queens Park Rangers.
The veteran defender is expected to fill in for Leon King who will be out for a lengthy period due to an injury.
Foster who is also a former Rangers player is not convinced about the signing of the Nigerian defender and feels that he will bring nervousness to his former side's backline rather than strengthening the squad.
"I'm going to upset a lot of people here, I find myself doing that no matter what I say but I think it's a bit desperate from them," Foster told BBC Sportsound via Football Scotland.
"I was never fully convinced with Balogun when he was here. Initially, I would give him an allowance because I thought he was younger, I didn't realise he was in his 30s,
"He makes a lot of mistakes, he doesn't look composed. When you compare him to someone like Connor Goldson who is a very good defender but he has composure and a presence.
"I don't think Balogun brings that, he brings a nervousness to the Rangers defence when he plays, from the outside looking in."
The Scottish giant's manager, Michael Beale opted to sign the Super Eagles centre-back due to his experience and familiarity with Scottish football, rather than an unfamiliar name.
The 35-year-old has made 40 appearances in the Scottish Premiership which is a testament to his acquaintance with the league.
Having won the league title and the Scottish Cup in his previous spell, Beale will also be hoping that Balogun can add his winning mentality to the side.
