Official: Nigerian winger departs Watford for 1. FC Nurnberg
Published: July 19, 2023With a statement on their official website, German 2.Bundesliga club 1. FC Nurnberg have announced the signing of exciting English-born Nigerian winger Joseph Hungbo.
With his permanent transfer to Nurnberg, Hungbo has ended a four-year association with Watford, whom he joined following his release by Crystal Palace.
Nurnberg have not disclosed the transfer fee paid to land the services of Hungbo and were also silent on the length of contract that he was given.
He is the second Nigerian player sold by the Hornets this month, after Super Eagles assistant captain William Troost-Ekong who switched to PAOK in Greece.
Hungbo totaled seventeen appearances in all competitions for Watford's first team and was in action for 487 minutes.
He shone during a loan spell at Ross County in the 2021-2022 campaign, scoring six goals in 33 games with one of the strikes winning the club's Goal of the Season accolade.
Hungbo also enjoyed a successful loan spell at Huddersfield Town in the second half of last season, netting three goals in fourteen appearances for the Terriers.
The 23-year-old says he is happy to join Nurnberg and revealed that he watched their pre-season friendly against Arsenal last week which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Speaking to the club's official website, Hungbo said: "It's my first time as a footballer on the mainland and I'm very excited about what awaits me in Nuremberg.
"Of course I informed myself extensively about my new club. I watched Arsenal live in the stadium and after talking to my new coach and the sporting director I was thrilled.
"The FCN still has a blatant appeal, a large fan base and almost always 30,000 spectators at home games in the stadium. I'm really looking forward to playing there for the first time."
Hungbo has started training with his new teammates at Nurnberg ahead of their upcoming friendly against Unterhaching.
