Super Eagles defender makes decision on his Ajax future amid Fulham, Brighton interest
Published: July 20, 2023Left-footed Super Eagles central defender Calvin Bassey has made a decision on his future at Ajax Amsterdam amid speculation linking him with a return to England this summer.
Brighton & Hove and Fulham have both been linked with a move for the Leicester City academy product who is a homegrown player in the eyes of the English Premier League.
The Seagulls are considering signing Bassey as an alternative to Chelsea central defender Levi Colwill while the interest from Fulham is more concrete, with the Cottagers recently launching a bid worth £15million for the former Glasgow Rangers player.
According to Voetbal International, Bassey is not eager to leave Ajax this summer because he feels he has unfinished business in the Netherlands and would only think about a departure if the Amsterdam club inform him that he's surplus to requirements, which is not the case as of now.
The 23-year-old played the entirety of the second half, in what was his first pre-season game, as Ajax Amsterdam thrashed Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 at Sportpark De Toekomst (Amsterdam-Duivendrecht) on Tuesday.
Exactly a year ago, Bassey become the most expensive Nigerian defender in history, overtaking Super Eagles legend Taribo West, when he moved to Ajax for a guaranteed fee of 23 million euros.
He was one of the first names on the teamsheet in the first half of last season but lost his spot in the starting XI after the dismissal of Alfred Schreuder.
