Abiama features for Greuther Furth in eight-goal thriller against Liverpool
Published: July 24, 2023Nigerian striker Dickson Abiama featured for German 2. Bundesliga side SpVgg Greuther Fürth as they were held to an entertaining 4-4 draw by Liverpool in a pre-season friendly at MS Technologie Arena (Villingen-Schwenningen) on Monday afternoon.
The Premier League side led 1-0 at halftime thanks to Luis Diaz's stunning finish at minute 22.
After a sloppy moment by the Liverpool goalkeeper, Julian Green restored parity for the Germans in the 47th minute, but Greuther Fürth found themselves two goals down following strikes from Darwin Nunez.
Lukas Petkov's goal and a brace from Armindo Sieb saw Greuther Fürth establish a one-goal lead after 76 minutes
Manager Alex Zorniger gave a run-out to Abiama by bringing him on in the 75th minute and he was presented with a glorious chance to extend the lead but failed to convert after a delightful pass from Sidney Raebiger.
The miss proved costly as Liverpool drew level in the 89th minute when Mohamed Salah converted from close range.
Since his arrival at Greuther Fürth in 2020, Abiama has tallied 12 goals in 87 games across all competitions, including his match-winner against Fortuna Düsseldorf in May 2021 which helped the Cloverleaves secure promotion to the Bundesliga.
Abiama's standout performance in pre-season was the hat-trick he scored in a 5-2 rout of SpVgg Ansbach on July 3.
