Tottenham coach impressed with Udogie but refuses to promise him game time for now
Published: July 26, 2023Speaking at the press conference ahead of Tottenham Hotspur's friendly against Lion City Sailors at the Singapore Festival of Football, manager Ange Postecoglou admitted that he was impressed with Italy U21 international of Nigerian descent, Destiny Udogie.
After Udogie joined Tottenham Hotspur last summer, a decision was made to loan him back to Udinese so he can experience more first team football.
The young defender has caught the eye with his performance in training and the friendly against West Ham United in which he scored twenty four minutes into his debut after coming off the bench.
Although Postecoglou sees potential in Udogie, he has refused to make promises regarding him getting lots of game in the forthcoming season.
Udogie is predominantly a left wing-back and with Postecoglou favoring a 4-3-3 formation, the Italian-Nigerian is not yet guaranteed a spot in the starting lineup until he proves he's also adept at the left-back role during pre-season preparations.
In quotes relayed by Football.London, Postecoglou said: "I can't foresee anybody's game time right now, whether it's Destiny or anyone else.
"He's done really well. He's only a young guy. That's the pleasing thing. We've got a number of young guys aged 20, 21 in the group who are adjusting really well."
The 20-year-old Udogie could have made his full debut for Tottenham Hotspur in their friendly against Leicester City last weekend but the game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
