Southampton new No. 11 Tella bags assist v Owls, five other Super Eagles-eligible players feature

Six Super Eagles-eligible players were involved in Sheffield Wednesday's 2- 1 loss to Southampton in the first game of the new EFL Championship season.

Dominic Iorfa, the son of former Nigerian International with the same name, former Liverpool defender Michael Ihiekwe and Akin Famewo were named in Sheffield Wednesday's starting XI.

The trio were in action for 90 minutes as the Owls suffered their first loss of the season

Arsenal youth product Nathan Tella, and former Manchester City youth forward Samuel Edozie were named in Southampton's first XI while Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo started on the bench.

Wearing his brand new number 11 jersey for the first time in a competitive game, Tella thought he had scored the first goal in this season's Championship but his 8th minute strike that gave the Saints the lead was later adjudged to have been scored by Adam Armstrong.

Lee Gregory in the 54th minute restored parity for the home side.

Ché Adams got the winner for Russell Martin's side three minutes before the end of regulation time after receiving a pass from James Ward-Prowse.

Aribo came on in the 89th minute for Edozie as the Saints tried to protect their lead.

Nigeria international Paul Onuachu was left out of Southampton's match day squad amid speculation surrounding his future at the St Mary's Stadium.
