Man City's latest signing inherits jersey number previously worn by two Nigerian centre-backs
Published: August 05, 2023Manchester City confirmed the signing of Croatia international central defender Josko Gvardiol on an initial five-year deal on Saturday.
Gvardiol has been acquired from RB Leipzig, eight months after his outstanding performance for Croatia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he went the distance in all the matches played by Croatia and scored in the third place playoff against surprise package Morocco.
Shortly after his signing was announced, Manchester City officially confirmed that Gvardiol has been assigned the number 24 shirt.
Manchester City's number 24 shirt has been vacant since the 2017-2018 season when Nigerian centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo wore it.
Overall, Tosin made half of his career appearances (4) for Manchester City wearing the number 24 at the back of his jersey.
Nigerian-born central defender Nedum Onuoha was assigned Manchester City's number 24 for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
Onuoha registered 116 appearances for the Citizens, scoring five goals and bagging three assists.
While Tosin was on the books of Man City for eighteen years, rising through the youth team ranks to make his senior debut, Onuoha spent sixteen years at the Citizens.
