Super Eagles fullback Aina reveals how Tottenham messed him up before move to Chelsea
Published: August 08, 2023Super Eagles fullback Ola Aina has revealed how his move to Tottenham Hotspur was jeopardized before transferring to Chelsea on schoolboy terms.
Aina began his career at Chelsea's Cobham Academy and rose through the ranks to feature for the first team, for whom he made six appearances before leaving the club.
The 26-year-old revealed that he was on the verge of joining Tottenham after he was convinced by his dad who was a Spurs fan but the move fell through due to the indecisiveness of the club.
Before that, he had also been contacted by other clubs but his father wanted him to join either Chelsea or Tottenham.
The former Torino defender in a recent interview disclosed the full details on how he was messed up by Tottenham before Chelsea moved quickly to sign him.
"Obviously there was Millwall, Tottenham, Chelsea and Southampton, so my dad's already thinking about Chelsea and Tottenham," Aina told The Beautiful Game Podcast.
"We looked at them, obviously I'm a Chelsea fan, I want to go to Chelsea and at the time it was far to Cobham. My dad was saying you can't do it.
"He's a Tottenham fan, Tottenham is closer, so he wanted me to go to Tottenham. It was a bit sad but Tottenham is still alright, so we chose to go to Tottenham and I was focused."
The Super Eagles fullback continued: "I went on trial there, maybe three or four weeks, and within those three to four weeks, Chelsea were still begging my dad, I still remember the guys Darren Grace and Jim Fraser, 'bring your son, don't worry about the journey'.
"A the end of four weeks, I'm supposed to sign for Tottenham, I was waiting outside the office to get the paperwork ready. We were there at 12pm just sitting down for hours seeing people walk past for about three hours.
"I'm young, I've not eaten anything, I complained to my dad I was hungry. My dad got up to find out what was happening and they said they will get back to him. Four hours gone past so he cut it, walked out.
"I called Darren Grace at Chelsea, told him Tottenham were messing up, just joking around. I did a couple of days at Chelsea. Chelsea took me quickly, they were not trying to delay it."
Aina is back in the Premier League, joining Steve Cooper's Nottingham Forest last month on a free transfer from Torino and has signed a one-year deal.
