Official: Chelsea confirm squad numbers for three Super Eagles-eligible players
Published: August 08, 2023Through their official website, English Premier League club Chelsea have confirmed their squad numbers for the 2023-2024 season.
Of the 29 players in contention to feature for the first team in the upcoming season, three are eligible to represent the Super Eagles namely Noni Madueke, Carney Chukwuemeka and Lesley Ugochukwu.
Chukwuemeka was poached from Aston Villa last summer, Madueke joined from PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window, and 2023 Golden Boy nominee Ugochukwu was acquired from Rennes in France, with the three U21 players signing multi-year contracts.
Madueke has been assigned a new shirt number, changing from the number 31 he wore in the second half of last season to number 11.
Chelsea's number 11 kit became vacant after the return of João Félix to parent club Atlético Madrid, and previous owners of the shirt in recent seasons include Timo Werner, Pedro, Alexandre Pato, Juan Cuadrado and Didier Drogba.
Chukwuemeka has also changed his shirt number, taking the number 17 having worn number 30 at the back of his jersey in his maiden season at Stamford Bridge.
Ugochukwu will don the number 16, which became vacant this summer after Edouard Mendy transferred to Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia.
Cobham product Faustino Anjorin is not part of Mauricio Pochettino's plans for the new campaign, given that he has not been assigned a shirt number.
