Squad numbers: Man Utd hint Shoretire not part of Ten Hag's plans for 2023-2024 season
Published: August 10, 2023Manchester United have dropped the biggest hint yet that Flying Eagles-eligible player Shola Shoretire is not part of manager Erik ten Hag's plans at least for the first half of the 2023-2024 season.
The Red Devils have revealed the provisional squad numbers submitted to the Premier League ahead of their season opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Shoretire has not been given a shirt number despite being listed as a first teamer by the club on their official website.
Shoretire is back at Manchester United after spending the second half of last season on loan at League One outfit Bolton Wanderers, where he made sixteen appearances and scored his first goal as a professional.
The 19-year-old retained the number 47 he was assigned for the 2022-2023 campaign for the pre-season friendlies against Leeds United and Wrexham.
Manchester United have not allocated the number 47 shirt worn by the Anglo-Nigerian winger to any of the players named on the 27-man Premier League roster.
Since the appointment of ten Hag as coach last summer, Shoretire has received three call-ups for first team games without getting minutes.
He did not feature in the pre-season friendlies with Lyon, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Lens and Athletic Bilbao - a strong indication that he is surplus to requirements and a temporary or permanent departure from the Red Devils is in the offing.
Meanwhile, England winger Jadon Sancho has retained the number 25 shirt previously worn by Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo.
