Ajax new boy Chuba Akpom unlikely to make his Eredivisie debut on Saturday
Published: August 18, 2023Chuba Akpom is unlikely to make his competitive debut for Ajax Amsterdam on Saturday afternoon when they take on Excelsior at the Van Donge & De Roo Stadion in Rotterdam.
According to Dutch daily newspaper, Algemeen Dagblad, Ajax manager Maurice Steijn will not be able to count on the services of the former Middlesbrough striker for the Eredivisie meeting with Excelsior due to administrative issues.
Akpom is ineligible to be fielded because he has not yet been issued a work permit.
He may be in contention to make his competitive debut for the four-time European champions next Thursday when they face Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets Razgrad in the playoff round of the Europa League, subject to to being granted a work permit.
The Super Eagles hopeful is lacking match fitness as he has not played competitively since the Championship playoff tie with Coventry City back in May.
Akpom picked up an injury against the Sky Blues but made a return to full training with the Boro squad before his trip to the Netherlands.
Ajax have signed the Nigerian on a five-year deal until June 30, 2028, and will pay a transfer fee of €12.3 million to Middlesbrough, plus two million euros depending on whether certain variables are met.
