Celtic loanee Lawal makes impressive debut for Fleetwood Town
Published: August 20, 2023Two days after Fleetwood Town confirmed the capture of Bosun Lawal, the Republic of Ireland U21 international of Nigerian descent made his competitive debut for The Fishermen in a narrow 1-0 loss against Derby County at Pride Park in the Sky Bet League One.
The talented central defender has joined Fleetwood Town on a season-long loan in search of regular game time, which Celtic cannot offer him at the moment with established players such as Cameron Carter-Vickers and Maik Nawrocki ahead of him in manager Brendan Rodgers' pecking order of centre-backs.
Wearing the number 5 on the back of his jersey, Lawal put in an impressive full shift against The Rams in what was his first-ever start since turning professional.
Martyn Waghorn scored what proved to be the decisive goal midway through the first half when he slotted into the bottom corner, after Lawal lost possession in the Derby half as he tried to launch an attack.
Fleetwood Town came so close to an equalizer on two occasions but headers from Stockley and Nigerian striker Promise Omochere rebounded back of the crossbar.
According to stats from Whoscored, Lawal totaled eight interceptions, clearances and tackles combined, more than any other player in the Fleetwood Town side, and only bettered by Derby County's Eiran Cashin who registered 16.
Lawal had played just one game as a professional in the colours of Celtic prior to his starting debut against Derby County on Saturday.
